South Coast Team Rider Ryland Rubens
South Coast team rider Ryland Rubens has been blowing up lately. After recently returning from scoring some big waves in Hawaii he is welcomed back to California with sunny skies, light offshore wind and waist- to chest-high-plus reeling righthanders at Uppers. He managed to place 3rd in the Boys Under 14 group just behind 1 – John Mel – Newport Beach
2 – Eithan Osborne – Ventura.
Ryland has been making a lot of heats lately as well as freesurfing all over places like Nicaragua, Hawaii, and Indo.

A few days ago, we had the pleasure of meeting 5 time surf champion Stephanie Gilmore at our Pacific Beach location! I’m sure everyone is wondering how we pulled this one off! Stephanie picked a few surf shops in Southern California that she wanted to stop by, say hi, and surf for a bit and South Coast was one of them! We were stoked Steph picked us! Surfing side by side with a professional surfer is something I can cross off my bucket list! And the best part about the whole day- she is one of the nicest people ever! Thanks Stephanie for choosing South Coast and hope to see you soon!
Stephanie just finished surfing- posing with our crew!

Today, the Rip Curl Pro inPortugal has been delayed until further notice due to surf conditions at Supertubos. Without proper surf, not even the best surfers from around the world can give the proper competition we would like to see. Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said this:
“Conditions are not up to standard this morning and we’ve called competition off for the day…We have plenty of swell on the way – the challenge will be finding the appropriate window with the conditions. We also have a significant storm on the way which may threaten the event site. We’ll see how the next few days unfold.”
Rip Curl Pro Portugal is event number 8 out of 10 for the ASP Championship and this event is vital for naming the top surfer in the world. This competition is already close with the top 3 surfers ( Joel Parkinson, Kelly Slater, and Mick Fanning) only separated by 3200 points.
Once the proper surf conditions are available, here is the line up for the remainder of the Rip Curl Pro:

Recently, the ladies at South Coast had an amazing oppertunity to do yoga at Pacific Beach during sunset. Aside from the beautiful sunset, the most inspiring image was the young women that came out to support YSC and raise money for a truely great cause. YSC, Young Survival Coalition, is a non-profit orginization to support young breast cancer survivors and educate young women every where. Oakley partnered with them to produce YSC apparel and sunglasses for a portion of proceeds to go towards this organization. Oakley’s partnership with YSC has raised over $1 million! YSC was founded by a group of women who were all diagnosed with breast before their 35th birthday. Through education and awareness, they hope to stress the importance of self-breast exams, getting checked, and putting an end to “not catching it in time” so the women in our life can stay there for as long as possible! Check out www.youngsurvival.org for more information.
