Checking in with Jonah Pierce

It has been a while since we have heard from Jonah, but with school, work and surfing as much as possible, we totally understand why!

“The past few weeks I have been taking advantage of the consistent waves to shoot with a local photographer, named Ben Sitten. We are working on a video that will hopefully be finished soon. It’s really tricky getting water shots because the section, the photographer, and the surfer all have to be in the same spot. To get a good water shot it is really important to be extremely close to the camera; in the shot below the tail of my board was just half a foot from bens camera, but it still appears to be a few feet away. We have also been shooting in some more illusive areas around San Diego, like the cave shot below, which give a glimpse of the beauty this city has to offer. I’m anxious for some more swell to come so we can get some good clips at blacks, or something a
little more critical. Fingers crossed for this weekend!” –Jonah

Catching up with, South Coast team rider, Jonah Pierce!

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz

The past two weekends I had a Surfing America Prime event at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz and a Volcom event at Pismo Beach. The waves in Santa Cruz were big; big wave surfer Peter Mel was actually out there as water patrol surfing 15 foot waves on a 9’6 gun at the middle peak. the water was really cold, but i was warm in my 5:4:3 hooded Cypher wetsuit and neo-goo booties from Quiksilver. To get out into the water I had to jump off a rock about six feet high and there were eight foot waves breaking on it, with non-stop set waves coming through. I had a board that was too small and was really slidey, but luckily I still got 9th in the Prime event. For the Pismo contest the waves were really walled and it was super hard to pick a good one, so unfortunately I lost in the semi- finals. Although I lost earlier than I wanted, I still had a great time at the event hanging out with my friends from there, and getting to see Nate Tyler! Hopefully I will do better next time in the Prime event at Upper Trestles next month.

South Coast team rider Ryland Rubens has been blowing up lately. After recently returning from scoring some big waves in Hawaii he is welcomed back to California with sunny skies, light offshore wind and waist- to chest-high-plus reeling righthanders at Uppers. He managed to place 3rd in the Boys Under 14 group just behind 1 – John Mel – Newport Beach
2 – Eithan Osborne – Ventura.

Ryland has been making a lot of heats lately as well as freesurfing all over places like Nicaragua, Hawaii, and Indo.
